About this Item
Notes
Silver saucepans of this kind were fixtures of the eighteenth and nineteenth century kitchen and table alike, valued for their durability and for silver's naturally hygienic properties; they were used for warming and serving sauces, gravies and vegetables, with some forms made specifically for warming brandy or mulling wine. The turned wood handle, set at an angle to the bowl, kept the hand well clear of the heat whether the pan sat over a flame, a spirit lamp, or came straight from the stove to the table.
