James grew up on a farm in the lush, wooded, coastal region of the Garden Route in South Africa. The area has a long-standing history of woodcutters and woodworkers due to its naturally occurring forests and its abundant resource of natural and farmed wood. James comes from a family of woodworkers, furniture makers, artists and engineers, and he was exposed at an early age to the entire process of the business and artistry of woodworking.

He learned much of what he knows about traditional cabinetry from growing up surrounded by the daily workings of the industry and its craftsmen. He continues to apply this knowledge of traditional joinery techniques and artisanal craftsmanship to his designs and workmanship today.
