About this Item
A silver box, stamped with a Dutch tax mark for foreign-made silver, of unascertained standard between .250 and .833, likely 20th century
of rectangular form with a domed cover, wood-lined, the cover engraved with a monogram and the edge with a large beaded rim, 135g
height: 3,5cm: width: 11cm; depth: 9,3cm
Notes
This box carries not a fineness guarantee but a Dutch tax mark, a stamp confirming that duty had been paid on a piece of foreign manufacture rather than certifying its silver content to a specific standard. The Netherlands operated several such marks between the early nineteenth century and 1953 for goods that fell outside its official .833 guarantee, either because they were imported, of uncertain origin, or simply below the guaranteed threshold.
