French painter, ceramicist, sculptor and printmaker James Coignard was born in Tours, France. After a brief career in the French administration, he began studying at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Nice at the age of 23. Four years later, he left his position in administration to pursue a full-time career as an artist.

A decisive moment came in 1950 through his meeting with the Nice gallerist Paul Hervieu, who introduced Coignard to important figures including Georges Braque (1882-1963), Henri Matisse (1869-1954) and Marc Chagall (1887-1985). Initially associated with the École de Paris, Coignard soon developed an independent visual language through painting and ceramics. He established a ceramic studio in Paris in 1952 and, by the late 1950s, had shifted his focus increasingly towards painting.

During the 1960s, Coignard expanded his practice into glass, sculpture and other media, while his reputation grew internationally, particularly in Scandinavia and the United States of America. A significant technical development came in 1968, when he began experimenting with the carborundum printmaking technique in collaboration with Henri Goetz (1909-1989). The process became central to his practice, allowing him to explore richly textured surfaces and bold colours. Across painting, printmaking, and ceramics, he ultimately forged a deeply individual visual language defined by recurring figurative and symbolic forms.
