Siyancokola II (We Are Chatting II)

About the Session

The Toyota Stellenbosch Woordfees Benefit Auction forms an integral part of Strauss & Co’s ongoing partnership with one of South Africa’s leading arts festivals. Now in its fifth year, the auction reflects a shared commitment to supporting the visual arts and creating meaningful opportunities for artists and collectors. Held at Stellenbosch Town Hall and accompanied by a curated preview exhibition, the auction brings together works by both emerging and established artists. Its intention is to encourage new and seasoned collectors to engage with and invest in South African art, while expanding the market and improving access to the work of leading local artists. At its core, the auction places artistic excellence at the centre while seeking to create greater visibility and recognition for contemporary artistic practice.

Notes

Luzuko Dayile and Jan Maanda Tshikhuthula are South African printmakers who both trained at Artist Proof Studio in Johannesburg. Dayile was born in King William’s Town in 1989 and completed a Diploma in Fine Art at Walter Sisulu University in 2013, before interning as a professional printer and printmaking facilitator at Artist Proof Studio. Working mainly in prints and drawings, he draws on his relationship with his daughter, with the recurring figure of the horse representing that bond. He is now based in Buffalo City in the Eastern Cape. Tshikhuthula was born in Tzaneen, Limpopo, in 1983. In 2005 he studied at the Matongoni Art Academy in Venda under the artist Avhashoni Mainganye, who encouraged him to specialise in printmaking at Artist Proof Studio. Alongside printmaking, he works in charcoal and soft pastel, producing landscapes that reflect the journey from rural home to city, and has shown with Everard Read.
