About the Session

The Toyota Stellenbosch Woordfees Benefit Auction forms an integral part of Strauss & Co’s ongoing partnership with one of South Africa’s leading arts festivals. Now in its fifth year, the auction reflects a shared commitment to supporting the visual arts and creating meaningful opportunities for artists and collectors. Held at Stellenbosch Town Hall and accompanied by a curated preview exhibition, the auction brings together works by both emerging and established artists. Its intention is to encourage new and seasoned collectors to engage with and invest in South African art, while expanding the market and improving access to the work of leading local artists. At its core, the auction places artistic excellence at the centre while seeking to create greater visibility and recognition for contemporary artistic practice.

Notes

Gerick Terblanche was born in Cape Town in 1989 and lives and works on his family farm near Matjiesfontein, in the semi-desert Karoo. His work grows out of close observation of this environment, its fauna and flora, landscapes, colours and textures, and reflects a lasting interest in the human connection to nature. Terblanche combines detailed, realistic main subjects with abstract, simplified shapes, using composition, colour and spacing to support the intricacy of each piece. He regards his practice as a discipline of observation rather than of expression: realism, for him, is not about mimicking what he sees but about capturing the essence of a subject, and draws the viewer closer to easily overlooked elements of beauty. His work is held in private collections worldwide.
