About the Session

The Toyota Stellenbosch Woordfees Benefit Auction forms an integral part of Strauss & Co’s ongoing partnership with one of South Africa’s leading arts festivals. Now in its fifth year, the auction reflects a shared commitment to supporting the visual arts and creating meaningful opportunities for artists and collectors. Held at Stellenbosch Town Hall and accompanied by a curated preview exhibition, the auction brings together works by both emerging and established artists. Its intention is to encourage new and seasoned collectors to engage with and invest in South African art, while expanding the market and improving access to the work of leading local artists. At its core, the auction places artistic excellence at the centre while seeking to create greater visibility and recognition for contemporary artistic practice.

Notes

Fanie Buys is a South African artist currently based in London. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, in 2016, specialising in printmaking, and was co-recipient of the Judy Steinberg Prize for Painting and the Simon Gerson Prize for an original body of work. Buys works in a figurative style that considers the role of traditional portraiture in contemporary society. Drawing on found images, AI and unconventional subject matter, he treats painting as a performative meditation, often with a tongue-in-cheek wit. He has held solo presentations at 99 Loop Gallery, Cape Town, including This Man (2018), Happy Birthday Jesus! (2019) and Miss (2021), as well as So Called with New Normal Projects, London (2023). His work has also been shown at Barnard Gallery, Smith Studio, David Krut Projects and RK Contemporary, and he was selected for the Sanlam Portrait Award Top 100 in 2015.
