Critics Ratings
"Crop levels were down 50% because of the fire damage on the Simonsberg in 2016, a year when Rustenberg made no Peter Barlow, but this is still an impressive Bordeaux blend with notes of mint, cassis and forest floor, a touch of green tea and a balanced, stylishly oaked finish." - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 93/100 (Sep 2019)
"A blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 5% Malbec, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 John X Merriman comes bursting out of the glass with complex Cabernet tones of blackberry, dusty earth and dark chocolate tones with a soft herbal edge. Medium to full-bodied, the wine becomes grippy in the mouth with tight tannins then reveals some tart red fruit undertones. On the finish, the wine lingers with dusty tones of dark plum skin and subtle nuances of dried spice and sage." - Anthony Mueller, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 90/100 (Mar 2020)
