About this Item

Southend Chardonnay 2017
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
Newton Johnson is a benchmark family estate of the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, run by brothers Bevan and Gordon Newton Johnson. The Southend Chardonnay, from south-facing vineyards, is the more approachable of its two Chardonnays. 2017 was an exceptional, even Cape vintage. Tim Atkin MW scored it 92 in his South Africa Special Report 2018, Neal Martin from Vinous gave it a rating of 90, and Anthony Mueller from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it a rating of 90.

Critics Ratings

"This is the lesser of the two Newton Johnson Chardonnays, but not by much. Combining wooded and stainless steel components, it's a subtle leesy, pear and citrus-like white with good weight and palate cleansing acidity." - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 92/100 (Sep 2018)

"The 2017 Southend Chardonnay, which comes from south-facing vineyards and saw little new oak (moving more toward puncheons instead of barriques), has a pleasant bouquet of light guava and peach skin. The palate is rounded and lightly honeyed on the entry, though this retreats to reveal a spicy, stem-ginger-tinged second half with commendable depth and length. Very fine." - Neal Martin, Vinous, 90/100 (Aug 2018)

"The 2017 Southend Chardonnay begins with classic expressions of lemon curd and spiced apple-pear notes with oak aromas and citrus blossoms. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, the wine has surprising depth and a great finish. This wine is unassuming at first but once on the palate, the wine shows its power and elegance. The acidic backbone is integrated with the oak and will allow it to age for the next decade." - Anthony Mueller, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 90/100 (Oct 2019)
