About this Item

Merlot 2000, 2001
2 (1 x 2) 1500ml
Meerlust is one of South Africa's most historic estates, in the Myburgh family for eight generations, on the cool, maritime flats near False Bay in Stellenbosch. This is its Merlot, one of South Africa's pioneering varietal Merlots. 2001 was a cool, classic Cape vintage. Stephen Tanzer reviewed it for Vinous.

Critics Ratings

Meerlust Merlot 2001
"Dark red. Sexy aromas of redcurrant, tobacco and licorice; very Old World. Firm in a Bordeaux way, with fairly intense flavors of bitter cherry, plum, cedar and herbs framed by ripe acidity. In a restrained, drier style. Finishes with firm tannic spine." - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous (Mar 2007)

Meerlust Merlot 2000
"'Meaty mocha merlot' isn't the sort of mantra GDC would employ but it's irresistible here: this outstanding Merlot evokes gamebird, choc associations. 00 more intense; arresting savoury bacon (not smoked!) mingles with delicate violets; finish taut but more approachable at same age than 99." - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2004, 4.5*
