Michel Gros

Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Nuits Fontaine Saint Martin 2017

Burgundy International - Red
About the Session

Session 3 is devoted to red Burgundy, drawing together some of the finest terroirs of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. Grower estates such as Armand Rousseau, Denis Mortet, Denis Bachelet, Georges Lignier and Ghislaine Barthod anchor a run of grand and premier cru Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis and Vosne-Romanée, while a extraordinary group of lots from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, including Échézeaux, Grands Échézeaux, Richebourg, La Tâche and Romanée-Saint-Vivant, forms the session's centrepiece. Rounded out by classic bottlings from Volnay, Pommard and Nuits-Saint-Georges, plus a scattering of Beaujolais crus, this session offers exceptional depth for Pinot Noir collectors.

About this Item

Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Nuits Fontaine Saint Martin 2017
4 (1 x 4) 750ml
Domaine Michel Gros, based in Vosne-Romanée, is run by Michel Gros, eldest of the celebrated Gros siblings and sole owner of the Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Clos des Réas. Fontaine Saint-Martin is his own monopole in the Hautes Côtes de Nuits, a vineyard he developed and first bottled in 2012. 2017 was a fresh, generous Côte de Nuits vintage of aromatic, classically balanced reds. Jancis Robinson MW gave it 16 out of 20, with Neal Martin also reviewing it for Vinous and Allen Meadows for Burghound.com.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@briceandburnett.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

"A bit inky but with smoother tannins than Au Vallon and possibly good value." - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16/20 (Jan 2019)

"The 2017 Bourgognes Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Rouge Fontaine St Martin, which was introduced in 2012, has a fragrant, rose-petal-tinged bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannin, moderate depth and more black than red fruit toward the chalky-textured finish. This is the best of Gros's Hautes-Côtes." - Neal Martin, Vinous (Nov 2018)

"A mildly toasty nose features notes of lightly spiced red and dark currant. Here too the middle weight flavors possess reasonably good volume and vibrancy, all wrapped in a lingering if mildly atypical finish that flashes a hint of tar, which isn't a flaw but I can't say that it appeals to me." - Allen Meadows, Burghound.com (Jan 2019)
