One of Hodgin’s few laments is that the finished product encountered by viewers at exhibition cannot fully convey the process through which it was achieved, and it is the process – not the product – for which he lives… It is the non-linear manifestation of a painting that emerges, like structuralism’s notion of a sentence, in the specific meanings it selects and pulls from a universe of possible signification. And so it is that, at any one time, his studio is full of ‘pictures’ in various stages of completion. Some are finished in a sudden moment of insight. Some remain as a line, a colour field and a squiggle for years.
