About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Rosso di Montalcino 2021
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
From the same historic Sant'Angelo in Colle estate, the 2021 Rosso di Montalcino is the more immediately accessible and earlier-drinking Sangiovese from Il Poggione, sharing the traditional approach of long maceration and neutral oak ageing as the Brunello. The 2021 is described by critics as a dynamic and polished Rosso of real intensity. Bruce Sanderson from Wine Spectator gave it a rating of 90, and Eric Guido from Vinous gave it a rating of 92.

Critics Ratings

“A juicy red, with leather and underbrush accents framing smoky cherry, plum and mineral flavors. Well-structured and long, with a solid grip of tannins on the lingering aftertaste. Offers fine intensity.” - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 90/100 (Oct 2023)

“The 2021 Rosso di Montalcino is an immediate standout, with a classic, dusty blend of dried cherries, worn leather and earth tones further complicated by seared meat aromas. It's polished. Crunchy minerality underscores pure red fruits, all guided by vibrant acidity. This leaves the mouth watering for more as an orange and cranberry crunch lingers. The 2021 is a fantastic, dynamic Rosso that excites me to see what the Brunello of the vintage will bring.” - Eric Guido, Vinous, 92/100 (Nov 2023)
