About the Session

Rioja anchors the Spanish session with a depth and breadth that rewards both traditionalists and modern-style enthusiasts. La Rioja Alta is the most extensively represented producer, with Gran Reserva 904 spanning multiple vintages and formats, alongside the classic Reservas - Viña Ardanza, Viña Alberdi, and Viña Arana. Beyond Rioja, Sierra Cantabria delivers some of the most sought-after names in the sale. Their single-vineyard Amancio across 2002 and 2007, the Finca El Bosque, and the Colección Privada 2003 represent the very top of the Rioja hierarchy.

About this Item

Victorino 2007,2009
2 (1 x 2) 750ml
Founded in 2007 by brothers Marcos and Miguel Ángel Eguren, fourth-generation winemakers previously behind Bodegas Numanthia, Teso La Monja produces Victorino from ungrafted, pre-phylloxera Tinta de Toro vines in the northernmost part of the appellation, aged in new French oak. This lot offers two contrasting vintages: the 2007, a warm and characterful year producing full-bodied wines of ripe, concentrated dark fruit and firm structure; and the 2009, widely regarded as one of the outstanding recent vintages in Toro, combining warmth and concentration with the balance to produce structured, age-worthy wines of impressive depth. Robinson MW awarded the 2007 17 out of 20; Harding MW rated the 2009 16.5 at JancisRobinson.com. Matthews at Wine Spectator gave the 2007 91 and the 2009 93, with Raynolds at Vinous concurring on 93 for the 2009.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@briceandburnett.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

Teso La Monja Victorino 2007
“Pretty HEAVY BOTTLE. Scented with some evolution. Real edge to this wine. Sufficient acidity for the weight. Complete.” - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Jul 2013)

“Ripe yet focused, this red offers plum, blackberry, espresso and tobacco flavors, with notes of mineral and herb, firm, well-integrated tannins and a fresh finish. A modern style, but restrained.” - Thomas Matthews, Wine Spectator, 91/100 (Jul 2010)

Teso La Monja Victorino 2009
“Deep cherry red. Much more red-fruited and subtle than the Almirez. Lovely perfume, plenty of spice. Firm and pretty tannic on the palate, leathery (texture more than flavour). Dark and embryonic on the finish. Needs time.” - Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Jul 2015)

“Smoky, spicy notes mingle in this plush, modern red, framing cocoa, blackberry, tar and licorice flavors. A firm backbone supports the velvety texture, and luscious fruit balances high alcohol on the long finish.” - Thomas Matthews, Wine Spectator, 93/100 (Apr 2012)

“Inky violet. Wild, musky dark berry aromas are complicated by notes of Asian spices and lavender. Broad and sweet on the palate, displaying deep blackberry and cherry-cola flavors, velvety texture and intense spiciness. Nervy acidity adds focus to the long, sweet, spicy finish.” - Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 93/100 (Nov 2011)
