Teso La Monja

Alabaster 2009

Spain
About the Session

Rioja anchors the Spanish session with a depth and breadth that rewards both traditionalists and modern-style enthusiasts. La Rioja Alta is the most extensively represented producer, with Gran Reserva 904 spanning multiple vintages and formats, alongside the classic Reservas - Viña Ardanza, Viña Alberdi, and Viña Arana. Beyond Rioja, Sierra Cantabria delivers some of the most sought-after names in the sale. Their single-vineyard Amancio across 2002 and 2007, the Finca El Bosque, and the Colección Privada 2003 represent the very top of the Rioja hierarchy.

About this Item

Alabaster 2009
2 (1 x 2) 750ml
From the same Eguren family estate, the 2009 Alabaster is made from 100% Tinta de Toro sourced from ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines exceeding 120 years of age, vinified through the estate's 200% new oak treatment: malolactic fermentation in new French barrique followed by a further 18 months in a fresh set of new barrels. The 2009 is described by critics as a particularly nuanced and harmonious edition, with bottle age revealing layers of complexity not always present in younger vintages. Richard Hemming MW from JancisRobinson.com gave it 17.5 out of 20, Thomas Matthews from Wine Spectator gave it a rating of 95, and Josh Raynolds from Vinous gave it a rating of 94+.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

“Blackcurrant, oak spice, milk chocolate, clove and cinnamon. Much more interesting than the 2012, perhaps thanks to the bottle age, though it seems fundamentally more nuanced to me.” - Richard Hemming MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Nov 2014)

“Blackberry, blueberry, smoke, licorice, clove and mineral notes are harmonious and complex in this rich, smooth red. It has plenty of structure, but remains seamless through the long, toasty finish. Beautiful modern-style character.” - Thomas Matthews, Wine Spectator, 95/100 (May 2012)

“(200% new oak): Opaque purple. Hypnotic aromas of dark fruit preserves, incense, spicecake and smoky oak. Lush, palate-staining boysenberry and cherry-vanilla flavors reach every corner of the palate, with juicy acidity providing lift. Very rich but impressively vibrant wine with superb finishing thrust and chewy persistence. Offers a striking balance of power and energy.” - Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 94+/100 (Nov 2011)
