Marques de Murrieta

Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva 2010

Spain
About the Session

Rioja anchors the Spanish session with a depth and breadth that rewards both traditionalists and modern-style enthusiasts. La Rioja Alta is the most extensively represented producer, with Gran Reserva 904 spanning multiple vintages and formats, alongside the classic Reservas - Viña Ardanza, Viña Alberdi, and Viña Arana. Beyond Rioja, Sierra Cantabria delivers some of the most sought-after names in the sale. Their single-vineyard Amancio across 2002 and 2007, the Finca El Bosque, and the Colección Privada 2003 represent the very top of the Rioja hierarchy.

About this Item

Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva 2010
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
Founded in 1852 by Luciano de Murrieta, one of the founding fathers of modern Rioja winemaking, the estate moved to the Ygay property near Logroño in the late 1870s and was acquired by the Cebrián-Sagarriga family in 1983; it is now led by Vicente Dalmau Cebrián-Sagarriga from a 300-hectare estate at the southern tip of Rioja Alta. The Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial is made only in the finest vintages from La Plana, a single vineyard planted in 1950 at 485 metres altitude and the highest point of the estate, aged for a minimum of 28 months in American oak before extended bottle maturation. The 2010 vintage was named Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year 2020. Jancis Robinson MW gave it 17.5 out of 20, Thomas Matthews from Wine Spectator gave it a rating of 96, and Luis Gutiérrez from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it a rating of 97.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

“Transparent crimson. Smells of the strangest, and pleasing, mix of flowers and melted butter! Very classic and traditional, bodega influence! Great balance and intrigue. Long and intriguing. The effect of time is here to be tasted.” - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Oct 2021)

“Maturing well, this round red is a lovely example of the traditional style. Orange peel, dried cherry, forest floor, vanilla and black tea flavors mingle harmoniously over round tannins and citrusy acidity. Generous but gentle, lively, balanced and harmonious. Tempranillo and Mazuelo.” - Thomas Matthews, Wine Spectator, 96/100 (Sep 2020)

“I had very high expectations for the 2010 Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial, and the wine delivered as expected. 2010 was one of the finest vintages in Rioja in recent years, and this blend of Tempranillo with 15% Mazuelo (Cariñena) has to be one of the finest modern day Castillo de Ygays.....” - Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 97/100 (Jun 2019)
