Ribera del Duero 2012

Spain
About the Session

Rioja anchors the Spanish session with a depth and breadth that rewards both traditionalists and modern-style enthusiasts. La Rioja Alta is the most extensively represented producer, with Gran Reserva 904 spanning multiple vintages and formats, alongside the classic Reservas - Viña Ardanza, Viña Alberdi, and Viña Arana. Beyond Rioja, Sierra Cantabria delivers some of the most sought-after names in the sale. Their single-vineyard Amancio across 2002 and 2007, the Finca El Bosque, and the Colección Privada 2003 represent the very top of the Rioja hierarchy.

About this Item

Ribera del Duero 2012
1 (1 x 1) 1500ml
Bodegas Aalto was founded in 1999 by Mariano García, the celebrated winemaker who spent three decades as technical director at Vega Sicilia, in partnership with former Ribera del Duero regulatory council head Javier Zaccagnini. The estate blends old vine Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) drawn from nine villages across Burgos and Valladolid into a single, ambitious expression. The 2012, from a warm and generous growing season, is one of the most concentrated Aalto bottlings, dense and voluminous with dark fruit, plum and velvety tannins that give the wine both power and notable grace.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@briceandburnett.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“Very ripe and intense, superior concentration showing jam, dark fruit, prunes and sweet fruit. It is really voluminous and rich with velvety and creamy tannins. Structured wine with delightful fruit character. Very convincing and superbly made.” - Ferran Centelles, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Apr 2016)

“This red shows focus and density, with rich flavors of plum, blackberry, cocoa, licorice and mineral. The structure is muscular but graceful, featuring ripe fruit complemented by savory notes that keep this balanced and fresh.” - Thomas Matthews, Wine Spectator, 94/100 (Aug 2015)

“Opaque ruby. Deeply pitched black and blue fruit aromas are complicated by suggestions of mocha, licorice, cigar box and floral oils. Lush and broad on the palate, offering intense cassis and boysenberry flavors braced by juicy acidity. This plush, generous wine shows unlikely vivacity and finishes very long and sweet, with gentle tannins lending shape.” - Josh Reynolds, Vinous, 92/100 (Sep 2015)
