Aalto

Ribera del Duero 2017

Spain
About the Session

Rioja anchors the Spanish session with a depth and breadth that rewards both traditionalists and modern-style enthusiasts. La Rioja Alta is the most extensively represented producer, with Gran Reserva 904 spanning multiple vintages and formats, alongside the classic Reservas - Viña Ardanza, Viña Alberdi, and Viña Arana. Beyond Rioja, Sierra Cantabria delivers some of the most sought-after names in the sale. Their single-vineyard Amancio across 2002 and 2007, the Finca El Bosque, and the Colección Privada 2003 represent the very top of the Rioja hierarchy.

About this Item

Ribera del Duero 2017
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
Bodegas Aalto was founded in 1999 by Mariano García, the celebrated winemaker who spent three decades as technical director at Vega Sicilia, in partnership with former Ribera del Duero regulatory council head Javier Zaccagnini. The estate blends old vine Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) drawn from nine villages across Burgos and Valladolid into a single, ambitious expression. The 2017 comes from a difficult, frost affected and warm growing season that demanded rigorous selection from the bodega's own vineyards, giving a fresher, more approachable Aalto than usual, with softer oak integration and bramble and raspberry fruit framed by polished tannins.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@briceandburnett.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“A blend of all of Ribera is how winemaker Antonio Moral describes this cuvée from nine different villages, combining Aalto's own vineyards and purchased grapes. Subtle, floral and intense, it's a seamless if still youthful red with 50% new French and American wood, notes of dried herbs and vanilla, bramble and raspberry fruit and polished tannins.” - Tim Atkin MW, Ribera del Duero Special Report 2019, 94/100

“Opaque ruby. An expressive bouquet evokes ripe red and dark berries, licorice, mocha and woodsmoke, and a spicy note builds in the glass. Juicy and energetic on the palate, offering appealingly sweet blackberry, cherry cola and lavender pastille flavors that are sharpened by a peppery nuance. Smooth tannins come in late on a long, dark-fruit-driven finish, which leaves a subtle touch of vanilla behind.” - Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 93/100 (Jan 2021)
