About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Santo Spirito Rosso 2010,2013
4 (2 x 2) 750ml
Tenuta delle Terre Nere was founded by Marc de Grazia on the north slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily in 2002, and was one of the first estates to champion single contrada bottlings of Nerello Mascalese, helping to establish Etna as one of Italy's most compelling wine regions. The Santo Spirito contrada lies adjacent to the Guardiola vineyard at a slightly lower altitude as the slopes descend toward the Alcantara valley, farmed organically with old vines of between 40 and 100 years of age. The 2010 is a seamless, gracious expression of the site, with sweet red cherry, flowers, licorice and incense woven together over a supple, expressive finish. Antonio Galloni from Vinous gave it a rating of 92+.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

Terre Nere Santo Spirito Rosso 2010
“The 2010 Etna Rosso Santo Spirito is quite pretty, seamless and understated. Sweet red cherries, flowers, licorice and incense are all woven together in this soft, gracious wine that is quite appealing. The Santo Spirito has a bit more density and weight than the Guardiola, but the balance of fruit, acidity and tannin is fabulous. Hints of spice, new leather, tobacco and fennel are woven into the supple, expressive finish.” -
Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 92+/100 (Feb 2013)
