About this Item

Skurfberg, Kokerboom 2019
2 (1 x 2) 750ml
This two bottlelot pairs two of Eben Sadie's most celebrated 2019 Old Vine Series whites, both from the Olifants River region and both representing the outer limits of what old South African dryland viticulture can achieve. The 2019 Skurfberg is among the most decorated South African white wines ever produced, that earned a perfect 100 points from Tim Atkin MW. While the Kokerboom, named for the quiver trees near its source vineyard, is produced from a parcel planted in the 1930s blending standard Semillon Blanc with the rare red berried Semillon Gris once known as Greengrape, earning 97 points from Tim Atkin MW.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@briceandburnett.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

Sadie Family Skurfberg 2019
'A one-hudred-point white? From South Africa? I can almost hear the tutting and clucking from here. But I defy anyone to taste this monumental wine, preferably among a line-up of other, world-class wines and resist its charms. The crop was down 60%, resulting in an old-vine Chenin of mind-blowing focus, depth and concentration. Quince, lemon and subtle Asian spices segue into a palate of nuances, corners, light and shade and dark. Well done, Eben Sadie. Well done, the van Lill family, who grow the grapes. Well done, South Africa. 2023-31' -
Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 100/100

'From three old-vine, dryland blocks of chenin in Olifants River, 2019 yielded miserly 30% of usual crop. Has concentration, aromatic purity notable in all the whites. Full bodied, ripely dry, with abundant rich flavours (dried peach, quince) & flesh, sustained by tense minerality.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2021, 5* (95/100)

Sadie Family Kokerboom 2019
"Glorious old-vine Sémillon of exceptional intensity and purity from one of South Africa's most remote and remarkable vineyard sites." - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 97/100 (Sep 2020)
