About this Item

Old Vines White 2019
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
The 2019 vintage produced a Mullineux Old Vines White of memorable generosity and multi layered complexity, the season's natural freshness and extended hang time allowing Chris and Andrea Mullineux's five variety old vine blend to show uncommon density of flavour and richness of texture. Mullineux's 2019 Old Vines White earned 95 points from Tim Atkin MW, 17.5/20 from Jancis Robinson MW, and 94 points from Neal Martin at Vinous.

The Old Vines White is Mullineux's flagship multi variety blend, a Swartland white drawn from five parcels encompassing old vine Chenin Blanc, Clairette Blanche, Semillon Gris, Grenache Blanc, Viognier and in select vintages Verdelho and Viura, sourced across the four principal Swartland soil types, oxidatively handled in the press, fermented mainly in large old foudres and raised on the lees with restrained sulphur.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@briceandburnett.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

'Intense honey and beeswax on the nose. This is such a classic wine that has never disappointed but you can taste the extra concentration in this vintage. An untutored palate might assume wrongly that this wine has some sweetness because it's so rich. Satin texture and waves of flavour including green leaves and Cape gooseberries. Long, subtle and thoroughly admirable.' - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Mar 2021)

'The 2019 White Old Vines was left without additional sulfur on its lees until spring and matured in foudres and 500-liter used barrels for nine months. It has a fragrant bouquet of nutmeg, hazelnut and touches of white chocolate, suggestions of orange blossom developing with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a wonderful, tensile opening, hinting at marmalade, quince and subtle walnut and smoky notes on the finish, which has real gusto. This is a wonderful white blend from the Chris and Andrea Mullineux.' - Neal Martin, Vinous, 94/100 (Apr 2021)

'Masterly blend showing fruit & floral complexity, salty acidity & whisper oak spice (20% new). 2019 chenin (66%) with 4 other stalwarts plus verdelho & macabeo - former enhancing acidity, latter texture - in 4 main Swartland soils, like 2018 (5 stars, 96 pts). Year mixed-size wood. Worth ageing.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2021, 4.5* (93/100)

'Chenin Blanc is the marquee variety here, with support from 26% Clairette Blanche, Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Semillon Gris, Viura and Verdelho, most of which is sourced from 37 to 70-year-old vines. Lemon, lime and wet stone flavours with some phenolic grip and remarkable palate length. 2021-27' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 95/100
