About this Item

Rooidraai Chenin Blanc 2019
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
The Rooidraai - 'red turn' - takes its name from the deeply iron-rich, rust-coloured soils of the Carinus family's dryland farm on the Voor Paardeberg, where Chenin Blanc bushvines planted in the 1970s produce fruit of distinctive mineral intensity and structured depth. If the Polkadraai Heuwels is the more elegant of Danie Carinus's two single-vineyard Chenins, the Rooidraai is the more concentrated and complex - richer and more broadly structured, owing to its shale-influenced terroir and a 25% new oak component used with restraint. The 2019 vintage produced one of the finest Rooidraais to date: the continuing drought conditions of Stellenbosch's lean growing season concentrated the fruit in these old dryland bushvines to exceptional intensity, producing a Chenin Blanc of formidable depth, rasping mineral tension and extraordinary length.

Critics were unanimous in their praise, with Greg Sherwood MW awarding 94 points and describing its 'fabulous rasping tension, pithy, grippy phenolics and overall intensity.' Platter's South African Wine Guide agreed with 4.5 stars and 94 points.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

'If the Carinus Chenin Blanc is from the "premier cru" rows, this wine is from the "grand cru" rows as Danie Carinus describes them. Generally a different portion of the vineyard as well as a partial barrel selection of wines showing more intensity, minerality and tension. Aromatics show lemon herbs, lime peel, wet granite and white citrus. The palate follows with lemon and lime cordial, earthy pithy yellow orchard fruits and grilled herbs. Fabulous rasping tension, pithy, grippy phenolics and an overall intensity and serious Chenin Blanc austerity with mouth watering freshness. Very classy.' - Greg Sherwood MW, 94/100 (Apr 2020)

'Off dryland bushvines on the red-soiled farm whose name it uses. 2019 showing a little more complexity & breadth than its Swartland sibling, & a more intense, silkier acidity (both more assertive than the Polkadraai Heuwels). Fine balance. 25% new oak.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2021, 4.5* (94/100)

'Low in alcohol, but not short of flavour, this hails from dryland bush vines on red soils (hence the name) and is a little richer and riper than Carinus' Polkadraai bottling. Thatch and baking spice aromas segue into a palate that's leesy, complex and focused, with deftly handled 25% new wood and impressive length. 2021-27' - Tim Atkin SA Special Report 2020, 93/100

'As made by Lukas van Loggerenberg from Swartland grapes. Fermented and matured in oak, including a 25% component of first-fill. Yellow fruit, earth and some waxiness plus hints of vanilla and spice. A little rounder and broader than its counterpart above - very flavourful with nicely integrated acidity.' - Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 93/100 (Jun 2020)
