About this Item

Vargellas Vintage Port 2015
5 (1 x 5) 750ml
In years when a Taylor's Vintage Port is not declared, the decision may be taken to bottle a Single Quinta Vintage Port from Vargellas alone, made entirely from grapes grown on the estate and bearing the name and singular character of this great historic property. The 2015 Quinta de Vargellas earned 95 points from James Suckling and 93 points from Roger Voss at Wine Enthusiast. Taylor's is one of the oldest of the founding Port houses, established in 1692 and still family-owned and independent, now well into its fourth century. Quinta de Vargellas is pre-eminent among the wine estates of the Douro: located in the remote eastern reaches of the Douro Superior, acquired by Taylor's in 1893, it has been prized as a source of the finest Port since the 1820s. The estate is celebrated for wines of intensely floral, jasmine-scented character, with the fine, focused fruit and sinewy aristocratic tannins that give them extraordinary longevity: wines so distinguished that in declared years they form the backbone of the Taylor's Vintage blend, and in undeclared years such as 2015 they are bottled as a single-quinta expression regarded as more prestigious and collectable than many shippers' declared Vintages. "Top class with so much perfume and flower aromas.

Violets galore. Full body yet refined and tight with very powerful and polished tannins. Racy and linear. Turns juicy, fresh and medium sweet. Reminds me of the excellent 1967 Vargellas."

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@briceandburnett.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

"Top class with so much perfume and flower aromas. Violets galore. Full body yet refined and tight with very powerful and polished tannins. Racy and linear. Turns juicy, fresh and medium sweet. Reminds me of the excellent 1967 Vargellas." - James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, 95/100 (Jun 2017)

"This wine is ripe with tannins and powerful with ripe fruit. A solid character gives it density. The tannins and the richness of the wine are ripe and concentrated with fruit. Drink from 2026." - Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, 93/100 (Jan 2017)
