Limited Release Port 1986

KWV was for most of the 20th century the most powerful force in South African wine, with statutory authority over the entire industry. Its Limited Release Port programme drew on the finest fortified wine barrels from across the Boberg appellation, comprising Paarl and Tulbagh, and represented the pinnacle of Cape Port production in an era before specialist estates like Boplaas and De Krans assumed their modern prominence.

The 1986 release is now forty years old and demonstrates the extraordinary ageing potential of traditionally made Cape Port.

The KWV Limited Release Ports of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s are now historic collector's pieces: wines produced with exceptional care from old traditional Cape Port varieties, matured in large casks and released only in limited quantities to mark vintages of recognised quality. At their age these are wines of immense secondary complexity, with classic tawny development, rancio notes, dried fruit concentration and the spirit integration that only very long maturation can produce.
