About this Item
The 1985 South African vintage produced wines of genuine structure and dark fruit depth from the Stellenbosch Kloof, with the finest estates demonstrating the ageing capacity that the region’s best Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blends are capable of. The Overgaauw Tria Corda 1985 is a historic document of South African wine, one of the earliest vintages of what was the first Bordeaux-style blend produced in South Africa. Overgaauw launched Tria Corda in 1979 as a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cinsaut, then in 1982 refined the wine into its classic three-Bordeaux-variety form by replacing Cinsaut with Cabernet Franc, establishing the blend that has remained the heart of the wine ever since. The name Tria Corda means three hearts in Latin, referring to the three varieties that form the soul of the estate. Braam van Velden, the third generation of the Van Velden family who founded Overgaauw in 1905, pioneered not only this blend but also one of the Cape’s first uses of small French oak barrels and South Africa’s first single-varietal Merlot in 1982. The 1985 is Cabernet Sauvignon dominant with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, aged in French oak.

Critics Ratings
"More ambitious expression, combining three Bordeaux varieties in one of the early blends of its kind from the Cape. Capsicum, dried cassis, sour cherry and mint flavours are laced with a firm acidity. Powerful, lasting finish.” – Higgo Jacobs, 91/100 (March 2026 – Tasted at recorking.)
