About this Item

Red 1988
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
This wine has been checked and re-corked by Amorim, under the protection of an argon gas blanket, with each opened bottle being topped up with reserve wine from the same vintage, recorked, and resealed. This was done under the supervision of a technical team from Amorim Corks and Strauss & Co Fine wine Specialists Higgo Jacobs and Roland Peens, assuring provenance, quality and long life. The Seal code on the neck of the bottle can be traced on Amorim Recorking Directory

A rare piece of South African vinous history. Welgemeend was among the pioneering estates to embrace a Bordeaux-inspired approach to red winemaking in the Cape during the 1970s and 1980s.

Engen Private Collection

Critics Ratings

'The first label in South Africa to offer a Bordeaux blend. More structured and firmer than the 1987, offering liquorice and hints of fresh herbs. It opens-up to a dense frame, with sweet ‘pink’ fruit and fresh acidity. Balance by a savoury feel, its old-school but solid and long.' - Roland Peens, 93/100 (March 2026 – Tasted at recorking.)
