Rocche Costamagna

Rocche dell'Annunziata Barolo 2016

The Distinguished Cellar of David Brice
About the Session

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Wine Cellar, fine wine merchants. His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Wine Cellar thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David celebrated the variation of vintage but also took advantage of great vintages. Over the last 10 years the 2016s have proven to be one of the greatest modern-day Bordeaux vintages, on par or superior to the likes of 2010, 2009 or 2005. Across Bordeaux, the wines are structured and pure combining exotic notes and sweet fruit. As part of our annual 10-year auction, we showcase 2016 Bordeaux vintage which will delight over many decades, especially in large format. David also bought the highly regarded Italian vintage, which produced exceptional wines in Piedmont and Tuscany especially.

Critics Ratings

‘The 2016 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata is a classic wine from this site. Fresh and vibrant, with superb depth, the Rocche shows just how appealing the vintage is. Dark cherry, spice, mocha, cedar and leather build in the glass. More than anything else, I am so impressed with the wine's depth and dimension. The 2016 Rocche is one of the best Barolos I have tasted from Rocche Costamagna. 2024-2034’ - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 94/100 (Jan 2021)

‘Enticing aromas of red-skinned berry, leather and alpine herb emerge from the glass. The savory, balanced palate features raspberry compote, morello cherry, tobacco and licorice alongside fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. 2023-2032.’ - Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast, 93/100 (Sep 2020)

‘La Morra. Tasted blind. Just mid ruby. Earthy nose with a note of pine needle and a hint of old leather. The fruit is slow to emerge on the palate, but the whole is finely balanced with lively, supple acidity and coating tannins. Elegant as well as concentrated. 14.5% 2024 - 2036’ - Walter Speller, jancisrobinson.com, 17/20 (Jul 2020)
