The Distinguished Cellar of David Brice: A Rhône Collection
About the Session

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Wine Cellar, fine wine merchants. His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Wine Cellar thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

The Rhône valley was one of David’s favoured regions, known for its diverse range of reds and whites. These were quintessential French wines from excellent easy-drinking, to fine, long-term treasures. He enjoyed wines from all the villages from Vaucluse to Vacqueyras, and Cornas to Côte-Rôtie. David focused on top vintages for long-term maturation and lesser vintages for earlier drinking. The highlight perhaps is his deep collection of top Châteauneuf-du-Pape from great vintages like 2010 and 2007.

About this Item

Syrah Les Lézardes 2017
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
A terroir-driven Northern Rhône Syrah crafted just outside Côte‑Rôtie. The name Les Lézardes (“the cracks”) reflects the schistous vineyard soils’ fissures, which concentrate fruit, add minerality, and shape the wine’s precision and structure.

Critics Ratings

‘Dark violet. Intense aromas of cassis, blackberry, cola and spicecake carry licorice and cracked pepper overtones that build in the glass. Smooth and energetic on the palate, showing appealing sweetness and firm mineral spine to the dark berry and cherry liqueur flavors. Becomes spicier with air and finishes with sharp definition, a suave floral note and gentle tannic grip. 2020-2025 - Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 90/100 (Mar 2020)

'In a year when yields were down 15% to 20%, the 2017 IGP Collines Rhodaniennes les Lezardes Syrah is concentrated and intense, with briary notes of raspberries adding welcome complexity to the gentle cherry flavors. Medium to full-bodied, with silky tannins, it finishes taut and crisp, a lovely expression of Northern Rhône Syrah. 2020-2025 - Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, 90/100 (Dec 2019)
