The Distinguished Cellar of David Brice: A Rhône Collection
About the Session

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Wine Cellar, fine wine merchants. His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Wine Cellar thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

The Rhône valley was one of David’s favoured regions, known for its diverse range of reds and whites. These were quintessential French wines from excellent easy-drinking, to fine, long-term treasures. He enjoyed wines from all the villages from Vaucluse to Vacqueyras, and Cornas to Côte-Rôtie. David focused on top vintages for long-term maturation and lesser vintages for earlier drinking. The highlight perhaps is his deep collection of top Châteauneuf-du-Pape from great vintages like 2010 and 2007.

Critics Ratings

‘Half of the fabulous 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee les Origines was aged in new barriques, the rest in concrete vats, so there is some oak in play here, but the blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre and 20% Syrah has absorbed much of it. This full-bodied wine is tannic and rich, with fruit shading from cherries and red plums all the way through to plum and cola. Mocha and baking spices appear on the long, velvety finish. 2020-2035’ - Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, 95/100 (Oct 2017)

‘(made from destemmed fruit; raised in concrete tanks for the Grenache and small oak barrels for the Mourvèdre and Syrah) Saturated ruby. Fresh, smoke-accented cherry, red berry and floral aromas are complicated and sharpened by a spicy element. Sweet and seamless on the palate, offering red fruit liqueur and spicecake flavors and hints of lavender and smoky minerals that build with air. Closes sappy and quite long, showing youthful tannic grip and a resonating floral note.’ - Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 91-93/100 (Dec 2016)
