Notes
Sanel Aggenbach's Porthole formed part of a body of work titled Fool's Gold which was based on imagery associated with maritime exploration and investigated issues of cultural heritage and documentation. The work was largely inspired by the artist's visit to the National Maritime Museum in Paris and the idea of an illusive destination.
The present lot presents a muted, atmospheric field contained within a circular frame, evoking both a literal maritime reference and a contemplative device. Soft tonal gradations suggest mist, horizon, and distance, yet the image resists clear spatial definition. The wooden rim reinforces the sense of looking through a constructed aperture, positioning the viewer as both observer and participant. Aggenbach’s subtle handling of colour and surface creates a quiet stillness, where time feels suspended and vision remains unresolved. The work hovers between abstraction and landscape, inviting prolonged looking and a slow, meditative engagement with uncertainty.
