Notes

Elizabeth Margaret Vels was born in 1937 in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. She initially trained as a nurse before earning a Natal Teachers Diploma and later a National Art Teachers Diploma from the Johannesburg College of Art. Vels lectured in painting and art history while developing skills in papermaking, bookbinding, weaving, etching, and printmaking. She completed a Higher Diploma in papermaking and a Master’s Diploma in Technology. Her work combines artist books, painting, drawing, stitching, ceramics, and layered mixed-media techniques. Vels has exhibited extensively, both nationally and internationally, and her works are held in major South African collections, including the Iziko National Gallery in Cape Town, the Pretoria Art Museum, the Johannesburg Art Gallery, and the Stellenbosch University Museum, among others.
