About this Item
South Africa 1948-1973
Plate with a portrait of an Ndebele woman with headdress
c.1950-1970
terracotta with matt and glossy overglaze decoration
diameter: 18cm
Notes
This portrait captures the mood and emotions of the sitter and is clearly based on an actual subject. The skin colour is left as the underlying terracotta finish and the detail of the head covering has been stylised
Figurative imagery, especially depictions of indigenous African women, was central to Kalahari Studio's work. They were the first local pottery to successfully synthesise an indigenised South African content with international Modernist design trends of the 1950s.
