This auction features the notable private Cape silver collection of Mary Eleanor Hibbert assembled over many decades and featuring rare pieces, including a double beaker, alms dish, sugar bowls, snuff boxes and 18ct gold clasps from the golden age of Cape silversmithing. Master silversmiths included in this collection are Willem Godfried Lotter, Lawrence Holme Twentyman, Johannes Casparus Lotter, Johan Hendrik Vos and Jan Lotter.

A Cape silver teapot, Jan Lotter, c.1813-1817
ovoid body, the shoulder engraved with a foliate band, the rim and footrim applied with gadrooned borders, the domed hinged cover engraved with wrigglework band and surmounted by a part gilt bud-and-leaf finial, the side applied with an ebonised handle, 775g,17cm high

Notes

Jan Lotter, active as a silversmith between 1813 and 1817 at 22 Keerom Street, may possibly be Johannes Matthias Lotter (born 1759), the son of Johannes Casparus Lotter (born 1737) and Johanna Catharina van Kerken.
