Notes

Montague Dawson is widely regarded as one of the finest marine painters of the 20th century, known for his meticulous portrayals of ships that combine technical accuracy with dramatic flair. Dawson was mostly self-taught but briefly worked in a commercial art studio before serving in the Royal Navy during World War I. It was during his naval service that he met the seascape painter Charles Napier Hemy (1841-1917), whose influence shaped his approach to marine art. Dawson became particularly celebrated for his depictions of clippers, vessels renowned for their majestic appearance and exceptional speed.

In the present lot, a clipper is shown advancing with billowing sails, surging forward in a dynamic contest between timber, sail, and the raw power of the sea. These ships were admired not only for their speed but also for their capacity to carry large volumes of cargo, attributes that marked the pinnacle of sailing technology before the advent of steel-hulled, mechanised vessels that replaced them within a few generations. Dawson’s deep knowledge of naval architecture and his personal experience at sea allowed him to capture these vessels with remarkable authenticity, while his skill as a draftsman lent an atmospheric intensity to his work. Often referred to as the “King of the Clipper Ship Artists,” Dawson’s paintings celebrate Britain’s rich maritime heritage and continue to be held in major collections worldwide, including the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich and the Royal Naval Museum, Portsmouth.
