Vintage baskets from southern Africa: The collection of Dr Elizabeth Terry
About the Session

This selection of vintage baskets comes from the collection of Dr.Elizabeth Terry, a social scientist with a special interest in craft development. It marks a historic moment, being the first time a collection of this kind has come to market. Originating from Southern and Central Africa, these baskets demonstrate how everyday objects—once used for practical purposes like storing food, sifting grain, and carrying goods—transform over time into cultural artifacts and works of art.

About this Item

Kavango East Region, Namibia 20th century
Shambyu carrying basket, circa 1990
Hyphaene petersiana palm for binding material and Eragrosti pallens grass for inner core with 'Forehead of the Zebra' design.
20cm high, 40,5cm diameter

Notes

What is unusual about this basket is that it is much taller and steeper than a typical Kavango basket. The technique to start this basket is chequer weave or checkerwork. The Kavango weavers originally made their baskets with a thick bundle of grass for the core. To enhance their baskets’ marketability, the weavers were encouraged to make the coils finer and tighter by wrapping over very thin grass core bundles. To obtain the dark brown colour, palm leaves are boiled with the bark of Euclea divinorum tree roots.
