‘The 1949 Clos des Lambrays is an astonishing wine. Like the only other bottle encountered, this comes from the private collection of Ronald Avery and therefore is unlikely to have been moved. Its bouquet fixes you to the spot: ethereal scents of brown leaves, black tea, bay leaf and crushed stone that is almost ineffably pure. The palate is underpinned by filigree tannin that lend it a silk-like texture with touches of soy lining the harmonious finish. There is something almost elegiac about this wine. Profound. Tasted at a private dinner in London. 2018-2028’ - Neal Martin, Vinous, 98/100 (Mar 2018)
'The bottle of Clos des Lambrays 1949 opened at La Trompette came from Ronald Avery's personal collection and is likely to have never been moved since its original purchase. It was an otherworldly wine blessed with an astonishing bouquet: Vervane tea, jasmine, autumn leaves, damp moss and elderflower all with brilliant clarity after 65 years. The palate rests on super-fine tannin. It is a weightless Clos des Lambrays, feminine and floral, so elegant that you almost miss its length. It has gone way beyond fruit descriptors, more a tactile sensation of harmony and serenity. That's what it tastes like...serenity! 2015-2020’ - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 98/100 (Apr 2015)
