Notes
Hindy Rutenberg, a pupil of renowned artists Maurice Van Essche (1906-1977) and Lippy Lipschitz (1903-1980) at the Michaelis School of Art, was a painter whose work garnered significant critical praise despite her infrequent exhibitions. Her teachers held her work in high regard. Maurice van Essche, particularly, considered her “a fine artist with a very personal talent”. Rutenberg’s style often drew comparisons to the celebrated South African artist, Irma Stern, with critics noting a strong resemblance in her vigorous brushwork, impasto technique, and use of vibrant colouristic contrasts.
