About this Item
In 1892 the farm had previously been divided into two pieces and was nearing on derelict when 'future' Prime Minister of the Cape, John X Merriman, stepped in with his brother-in-law Sir Jacob Barry to rescue both farms. He played a great role in revitalizing Rustenberg and in promoting the tourism and agricultural value of Ida's Valley, the area close to the town of Stellenbosch in which Rustenberg is situated. The John X Merriman is Rustenberg's Estate wine.

Critics Ratings
‘The iconic 2008 John X. Merriman is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot plus a little Cabernet Franc and Malbec that was raised in 35% new oak French barrels for 21 months. It has a very ripe bouquet of blackberry, plum and a touch of tobacco that is perhaps a little disjointed and will need time to integrate. The palate is full-bodied with firm, dry, grippy tannins and a lot of tobacco-tinged black fruit. It expresses commendable definition and freshness with a nice touch of austerity that should see it age over 7-10 years with ease.’ - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 93/100 (Aug 2011)
‘Dark crimson, a bit less herbaceous than earlier vintages I have tasted. Chewy, very fresh, full of energy and leads you on to the next sip. Clean cut, almost angular but the fruit fills the structure. 2012-2020’ - Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Oct 2012)
