About this Item

2014 Hooiwijn
1 (1 x 1) 500ml

Far up the west coast, about 3 and a half hours drive north of Cape Town, lies an open bay of white sand strewn with black mussels and kelp, with the icy waters of the Atlantic beating the shore. This is Donkiesbaai, where the Engelbrecht family have holidayed for four generations. This unassuming spot lends its name to the adventurous range of wines from the Piekenierskloof. The wine was made with the cuisine of the west coast in mind. Crayfish, Harders, and a cold glass of wine is part of the history that is Donkiesbaai.

Critics Ratings

'Rich & unctuous 2014 barrel-fermented chenin, dried on straw ('hooi') mats for a concentrated, lively mouthful of honey, dried apricots, butter & cream. Nicely balanced acidity offsets substantial sweetness for cheese or dessert. Ex Piekenierskloof, like 2013 (4 stars, 89 pts).' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2016, 4.5*

'This dessert wine features pure mango and papaya notes gliding along, with sweet but fresh hints of pineapple, heather and ginger adding nuance through the finish. This has the energy to match the display of tropical fruit. Chenin Blanc. Drink now through 2020.' - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 91/100 (Jun 2015)
