Cape Tawny 2009
6 (1 x 6) 375ml
Like the maiden 2008, this was produced from Swartland grapes (reportedly a blend of Tinta Barocca, Grenache, Carignan and Pinotage, under the direction of fifth-generation port producer Dirk Niepoort. Fiery and tannic in its youth, suggesting decades of ageing potential, it was released after 12 years of maturation in traditional 'pipes' (cigar-shaped barrels imported from Portugal) as a limited-release and highly collectable Tawny.
'Can't let them taste this back in Portugal, I will be shot!' said Dirk on release and quoting it as 'one of the best wines I have ever made, anywhere!'
