1980 marked exactly 100 years since the Nel family bought their farm in Calitzdorp. It was also the maiden vintage overseen by fifth-generation winemaker Carel Nel, who soon earned an almost unrivalled reputation for port-style fortifieds, initially made entirely from Tinta Barocca (planted in the 1970s by his father, believing it to be Shiraz!).
