Notes
This dog was designed by Jo Thorpe who ran the African Art Centre in Durban between 1963 and 1991.
The beaded writing on the dogs back is DLAYEDWA meaning Eating Alone. The other side is Inja meaning dog.
It was made by Khulumelaphi Mahlambisa for Jo Thorpe, as her dog to carry around with her to functions. It was a joke, to imitate Jill Addleson, the longstanding Curator of the Durban Art Gallery, who was well known for carrying her dog everywhere.
