Edouard John Ravel was well known as a skilled and versatile painter who depicted a variety of subjects including historical, religious, landscape and portrait works. He received formal training at the Ecole d'Art, Geneva, studying under Barthélémy Menn and Alfred Van Muyden. From 1878, Ravel began exhibiting his work at prestigious institutions such as the Salon des Artistes Français and was included in the Exposition d'Anvers, for which he received a bronze medal.
He spent the majority of this artistic career in Paris, both maintaining his own studio practice and teaching at L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris. He died in Geneva just after his 53rd birthday on 8th March 1920.
