About this Item

South African 1942-
Large tile with decorative markings and motifs

signed ANDREW WALFORD 2013

white-, blue- and brown-glazed earthenware
80cm high, 110cm wide, 1cm deep

Notes

"My skill is only a fraction of the finished pot, for at every stage I am borrowing the forces of nature and adding to them a purpose."
- Andrew Walford

Walford works in the Anglo-Oriental tradition and is inspired by the indigenous African bush that surrounds his home and studio. Andrew is a hands-on, intuitive artist who is singularly involved in every aspect of making the ceramic item; from digging his own clay to forming and firing. He uses the influence of Japanese brush strokes to enrich his pottery which he refers to as Zulu-Zen mark making.

*This tile includes a wall-hanging bracket.
