About this Item

A Regency Federal style convex wall mirror, early 20th century
the giltwood and gesso moulded circular frame applied with thirteen stars, surmounted by a carved eagle with outspread wings, oxidisation, 81cm high

Notes

These mirrors were made primarily in England and made their way across the Atlantic to America. Leaders like Thomas Jefferson looked to the classical past for inspiration when creating the new American democratic Republic, thus the federal convex mirror was born. This mirror was topped with an eagle symbolizing American independence, while the 13 stars represent the original 13 colonies that declared independence from Great Britain.
