About this Item

Estate Red, 2001
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

With a history dating back over 300 years, Vergelegen has kept a simple winemaking philosophy this entire time, ‘there must be harmony between the old and the new’. Having produced fine, modern wines for two decades, Vergelegen is one of South Africa’s highest regarded, established producers. Situated on the Schaapenberg in Somerset West, overlooking False Bay. The 3,000 hectare estate is situated in one of the richest floral regions of the world and they practice sustainable farming and have various environmental projects.

Only the Rondekop vineyards are used for the production of the Vergelegen. Dry land vineyards with a planting density of 4000 vines / ha. The soils are granites with a deep clay / pebble base exhibiting excellent water retention characteristics.

Winery Tasting Notes: The wine shows a rich ruby colour with almost an opaque center. Cassis, pencil lead, spice and red berries, abound on the nose. Matured in new French oak for 18 months the fruit, tannin structure and fine acidity indicate a wine of balance and finesse reflective of the Vergelegen terroir.

Critics Ratings

‘Occupies this property’s rarefied flagship slot; comfortably holds its own in strong field for Cape’s finest red. Mainly Cabernet Sauvignon (about 70%), some Merlot and Cabernet Franc from miniscule 3-5 tonnes per hectare yields; 14% alcohol. Always well filled out, dense but fine, deep-layered fruit (sweet blackberries with roasted spices) and smooth, smothering tannins. Latest 2001, as previous, potently fruit-laden with usual trimmings, including toffee notes.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2004, 5*

‘Ruby-red. Knockout nose shows an almost candied fruit character: black raspberry, plum, cedar, smoke, tar and roasted oak. Wonderfully sweet, broad and lush but with firm underlying spine and no sense of excess weight. Like the 2001 Cabernet, this saturates the entire palate. Incredibly suave and polished wine, with outstanding volume, sweetness and persistence. From a single sit. 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc’ - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 93+/100 (Mar 2005)
