About this Item

Vin de Paille, 1997
3 (1 x 3) 375ml

Michel’s Chapoutier’s landholding, track record and incredible consistency from entry-level wines through to the single-vineyards is unparalleled in the world of wine. Chapoutier ranked 4th in 2019 amongst the “World's Most Admired Wine Brands“. Chapoutier is one of the oldest names in the Rhone valley. Founded in 1808 by the Calvet family, it was sold to the Chapoutier family in 1855. Today, Michel Chapoutier is the reference-point for the entire Rhône Valley, especially with their single vineyard Sélections Parcellaires. In fact, Robert Parker has praised Chapoutier’s Northern Rhône’s as some of the world finest wines.

Dessert wine - the fruit was dried on a bed of straw nearly two months before pressing.

Producer tasting notes: 'Appearance: deep golden yellow. Nose: candied fruits and honey. Palate: the wine has an outstanding balance, concentrated and a great length. This wine can be kept more than 50 years.' - M. Chapoutier

Critics Ratings

'Nectar lovers will be amazed by the richness of this wine. The fully mature grapes spend two months on straw mats before being pressed. It exhibits a light gold color, with a texture resembling molasses. Despite being aged in 100% new oak, no wood is discernible. Its astonishing white truffle-scented nose includes notions of coffee, marmalade, and creme brulee. Extraordinarily dense and thick, with surprisingly good underlying acidity, this is a remarkable wine. Sadly, only 100 cases exist. It will last for 100 years, but it will be impossible to resist in its youth.' - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 99/100 (1999)

'Deeper golden-bronze color. Wilder aromas of game and white truffle. Even sweeter and more concentrated yet still fresh; powerful game and barley sugar flavors. Chewy with extract. A wine of extraordinary persistence, perhaps the longest I tasted on my recent tour of the Rhone Valley.' - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 96+/100 (2000)
