About this Item
Kaapzicht is a 4th generation family-owned wine estate, located in Stellenbosch. The name Kaapzicht means ‘Cape view’ and is attributed to the beautiful views of Table Mountain and Cape Town which are seen from the farm. The Steytler family has farmed the land since 1946 and today, brothers Danie and George own the 190-hectare estate. Located on the Bottelary hill, the farm experiences a mild climate with cool sea breezes and consists of old, weathered granite soils.
Danie Steytler Jnr took over the reins from father Danie in 2009, and with the emphatic introduction of this single vineyard Chenin in 2013, earning a Platter 5* on release, cemented his intentions to build on the family brand and grow the quality offering. Named 1947 after the planting date of the vineyard (planted by Danie’s great grandfather), thought to be SA’s 2nd oldest block of Chenin, the wine was introduced to mark 30 years of bottling under the Kaapzicht label. The maiden 2013 is very hard to find in the market today as it’s produced in minute quantities from this low yielding vineyard (70 cases made).

Critics Ratings
‘The 2015 "1947" Chenin Blanc has a light dried pineapple and citrus nose with scents of apricot and quince developing in the glass. The palate is fresh on the entry with a slightly waxy texture, the acidity nicely judged and armed with an appealing lightly honeyed, quince-tinged finish.' – Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 90/100 (Apr 2017)
‘From SA’s 2nd oldest chenin vineyard; bunch-pressed, fermented/year in oak, half new. 2015 similar styling to 2014 (5 stars, 97 pts), perfect fruit/oak balance, a rich almond shading to quince & kumquat intensity. Youthful, fresh & lithe, with a great future.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2017, 4.5*
'Direct and clean aromas of Anjou pear, apple flesh, hay, citrus zest, lime leaf and wet stone greet you on the nose of this attractive old-vine Chenin Blanc. The palate boasts a pleasant weight and richness, but with lifting acidity and bright, citrusy flavors for balance. Notes of fresh hay and soft toast unfold on the finish. It's a joy to drink now, but this harmonious and well-balanced wine.’ – Lauren Buzzeo, Wine Enthusiast, 93/100 (Sep 2016)
‘The nose is extraordinarily complex: Pear, citrus, white peach, even a little pineapple, flowers, dried herbs, spice and a touch of vanilla. The palate, meanwhile, possesses tremendous presence, its breadth and depth something to marvel at. A great old vineyard vinified with aplomb – production amounting to just 900 bottles, a selection made from French and Hungarian oak barrels of various sizes, some 30% new. Just three vintages in, this is now firmly established as one of South Africa’s finest examples.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100 (Jun 2016)
‘A nose reminiscent of chalk and cedar trees on this rich full-bodied wine. There is a sense of pithy white pepper and green apple richness. A big, rich, structured mouthful with admirable restraint.’ – Decanter.com, 93/100
