Notes
The Ceramic Studio, renamed Linnware in 1940 was founded by Sir Thomas Cullinan at Olifantsfontein, a farm outside Johannesburg that had rich deposits of clay and lime. It was staffed mostly by woman students from the Durban School of Art who lived and worked on the farm.
Each piece was handmade and individually double-glazed, giving the work it's distinctive and characteristic luminosity which they became renowned for.
The Studio closed around 1955 but left behind a body of beautiful work produced over a period of 20 years.
