Notes
The 'voorkis' or wagon front chest was placed at the front of the wagon on which the wagon driver could sit and also served as storage space. The batten along the upper surface of the lid is said to have prevented the driver from sliding off when going up or down steep gradients.
Wagon kists are always tapered towards the bottom in order to fit between the two front wheel mud guards.
Wit-els or white alder is a tree found mainly in the Eastern Province and was often used for the tops of wagon chests.
